BIO
Artist Andrea Matus
Much of Andrea Matus’s work gravitates toward reimagining women’s stories—those silenced, mythologized, or overlooked. She doesn’t begin with a manifesto, but again and again, the faces she’s drawn to, the fragments she chooses, and the symbols she layers seem to reclaim a kind of presence. A forgotten portrait may become a heroine. A historical flourish may be reframed as a mark of resilience. These compositions unfold through visual tension—between surface and depth, elegance and disruption, intuition and intention.
Curiosity lies at the heart of her practice. Matus is fascinated by the way materials carry meaning, how texture can evoke memory, and how analog techniques and digital tools together can expand the vocabulary of visual storytelling. Her work moves fluidly between hand-built collage, embedded sculptural elements, and experimental layering techniques that invite translucency, texture, and time into the frame.
As an educator, she leads immersive workshops around the world, helping artists develop their own voice through process-driven, multi-modal exploration. With years of experience designing inclusive and dynamic learning environments, she is passionate about nurturing creativity through both personal inquiry and technical skill.
Matus shares this artistic life with her husband, assemblage artist Michael deMeng. While their voices are distinct, they are in conversation—his, a richly layered world of the beautifully bizarre; hers, rooted in symbolic portraiture and the reclamation of feminine narratives.
Her work has been exhibited internationally and is held in private collections across Canada, the U.S., Europe, and Australia. Select commissions are available, and she continues to mentor artists of all levels through in-person and online programs. Her current focus includes expanding into new formats and collaborative platforms that further explore the storytelling potential of mixed media.
