“I paint my own reality. The only thing I know is that I paint because I need to, and I paint whatever passes through my head without any other consideration.” ~Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo created her self-portraits as a way of diarizing her life. Loaded with symbolism and powerful imagery she tells a little more of her story with every canvas she paints. Collectively her retratos (portraits) essentially form a biography highlighting the most challenging moments of her life and providing us, her audience, with an intimate look at this artist’s soul.

In honor of one of the most influential female artists of our time, we are going to create mixed-media Retratos of our own. Transforming a humble canvas into rich and colourful tapestry we’ll integrate our own symbolism and exert our on influence over the story we tell. Whether you choose to use Frida as your subject, another influential person that has inspired you, or whether you bravely follow in Frida’s footsteps and tackle your own self-portrait is completely up to you.

Together we’ll explore many sophisticated techniques for creating our deeply symbolic multilayered collaged painting. We will use several methods, mediums and techniques for seamlessly merging otherwise unrelated imagery into a unified composition that will allow us to create portraits of our own.
